One-to-One Program

Listening is Compassion

Shanti volunteers provide one-to-one emotional support to people affected by HIV/AIDS, MS, other life threatening illnesses, or recovering from addictions. People call Shanti for a variety of reasons: Many need someone to talk to; some are living in isolation; others are afraid of burdening friends and family. Some people want to share their fears or feelings of grief or loss.

After participating in an in-depth training, volunteers are matched in a one-to-one relationship with a Shanti Partner (client).  The Shanti volunteer provides a peer relationship which is confidential, nonjudgmental, and nondirective.  Loneliness, anxiety, depression, and fear can be overwhelming.  Our free service is aimed at easing the burdens and improving the well-being of people who are living with the challenges of life-threatening illnesses and/or recovery from addiction.  By providing supportive listening and companionship, our volunteers help empower Shanti Partners to identify and meet their own needs.

Each Shanti relationship is unique and depends on the needs of the Shanti Partner.  The Shanti volunteer usually meets with the Shanti Partner for a few hours each week.  Some spend the time just talking, others get together to take a walk, have lunch, or spend some time at home with a video or a favorite game.  Each one-to-one relationship is based on the values of compassion and mutual respect.
