. . . not just a house, but a Place to Call Home

From our residents . . .

"Thanks for being there when my next move could have been the street.  Multifaith Works Housing Program is a brilliant idea, and much appreciated."

"I truly feel fortunate and blessed to be able to reside here during this difficult time in my life."

"Multifaith Works Housing Program has not just given me a place to live.  It has given me a home, an extended family, and most important of all: hope."

General Description

Multifaith Works provides low-cost independent community-based housing more . . .

Uniqueness of Program

Through the Housing Program, Multifaith Works helps people living with HIV/AIDS maintain access to medical care and supportive services while helping residents stabilize their lives through transitional housing--leading them from crisis to self-sufficiency through structured community living.  Laytner House is unique in that it is a house for people with HIV/AIDS who are medically-fragile and would be homeless if they did not have a place to live after a hospital stay or medical procedure; a CNA is on staff to assist these residents during their recovery.  Dalton House is unique in that its community-based living is directed toward supporting and assisting residents who are in recovery from alcohol and/or drug addiction.

Community Living

Quality of life is maintained by promoting a sense of community and enabling residents to share in group decision-making and problem-solving--the only HIV/AIDS housing program of its kind in King County.  In order to facilitate community, each house has a live-in Resident Advisor.  Multifaith requires all residents to participate in the upkeep of their house by doing chores, in attending weekly house meetings and bi-monthly all resident meetings, and in meeting with the Multifaith Works Housing Support Specialist at least once a month.  The weekly house meetings enable residents to participate in the governance of their house, to work through the day-to-day issues of communal living, and deal with interpersonal relations.  Although communal living can be challenging, residents do often learn better interpersonal and communication skills, increase sensitivity to the needs and concerns of others, better nutrition awareness and cooking skills, and better financial management skills in being required to submit their monthly rent payment (based on income) by the fifth day of each month.  Group meals, cooked monthly by CareTeam members, enhance the spirit of comraderie and unity of purpose.

Linkages to Supportive Services

All homes are conveniently located near major bus lines. The homes offer safe, supportive environments, and all have a live-in House Manager who is a Multifaith Works staff member. Volunteers are also available to assist with non-judgmental practical and emotional support, particularly through the Multifaith Works Shanti Program and CareTeam Program. Support for people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction is also available through the SHIFT Program.  Our collaboration with other HIV/AIDS service organizations provides our residents with access to a full array of "wraparound" services.
